What an amazing day taking possession of our new 58ft Narrowboat Kings Gambit II. This fantastic vessel is all we dreamed of and more. Thanks Simon for a truly professional, quality job, for keeping us involved every step of the way, even as we overcame the obstacles placed in our way by the Coronavirus pandemic. You never tired of insisting on perfection. I don’t think I have ever seen such a beautiful boat. Take a break my friend, you’ve earned it.

Keith Smith's narrowboat 'Sarah Jane'.

Met Simon on Sunday. Down to earth guy, had a good chat with him and a look around one of his 57-foot narrowboats – top class. If you’re in the market for a narrowboat, give Meg A Star a call.

Sel & Rachel with their widebeam 'Ducky'.

In 2017, Rachael and I first met Simon to look around a recent build (Cissy-Mo) and when we stepped aboard it was clear his attention to detail and quality of finish was a cut above the rest.

We decided to commission Simon to build Ducky (65′ x 12′ widebeam liveaboard) and the experience that he brought to the table was invaluable. Right from the start, we would talk through our ideas which Simon would take on board or offer up suggestions on things that hadn’t even crossed our minds. For any questions or problems, he was always able to find a clear solution, and throughout the build we would meet or call (or WhatsApp!) with progress. It’s been 5 months aboard now and we couldn’t be happier with the way she’s turned out.

Building a boat is no mean feat, but Simon is able to use his vast experience to guide you through the process easily whilst maintaining a master level of craftsmanship.

Highly recommended, thanks Simon!

A huge thank you to Simon for giving us Diebus Nostris.

It took us over a year of research, looking at 1000s of narrowboat pictures, reading pages of information from vastly more experienced boaters and then finally deciding on what we wanted her to look like, the interior layout and equipment levels that suited us best.

We met with Simon, armed with a folder full of pictures, scraps of paper and a wish list as long as your arm. He listened, understood immediately what we were looking for, explained if it couldn’t be done but always had an alternative idea, that was better than our original idea.

With Simon, he always builds his boats as if he was building them for him and Sandy, that’s the level of craftsmanship, care and attention you can only hope for as a client. The pictures of Diebus on these pages could have come straight out of our original ideas folder, that’s how good Simon is and how pleased and grateful that we chose him, and he had the patience in putting up with ME during the build.

Thanks Sime,
Martin & Sarah

Jules and Phil on board A Perfect Match.

Simon has been an absolute star to deal with for buying our narrowboat… We bought his 2017 show boat as the stunning fit-out matched our criteria exactly. Professional and friendly during the hand over and even chaperoned us for the first days maiden voyage ensuring no snags etc. Thank you again Simon.

Dave Richman and his wife on board their narrowboat "MegAStar 2".

We first met Simon and Sandy early in 2014 after responding to an advert for a boat they had already built called MegAStar. We liked the look of the pictures, so decided to make the 150 mile journey to Dewsbury to view it. Although the boat wasn’t exactly what we were looking for, the quality and finish of the build was exceptional, and we decided to buy it there and then.

We sailed the 215 miles back to Milton Keynes over the top of the Pennines, on nine different canals, the boat behaved impeccably for the whole journey, and we were very impressed.

In 2015 we approached Simon about building a second boat similar to MegAStar, but with everything exactly to our specifications. Simon agreed and we visited him and Sandy several times during the build to discuss various details with them. We have always found Simon very accommodating, and he has many good ideas and suggestions, it’s great that you are talking straight to the main man who is passionate and enthusiastic about his work. We named the boat MegAStar 2 and even had her painted in the same livery.

I would strongly recommend anyone who is thinking of having a boat built to contact Simon. He is he is an honest, down to earth, hard working, straight talking superb craftsman, and we wish him every success for the future.

We can’t recommend Megastar Narrowboats enough. Simon is a straight talking, straight up Yorkshireman, like Ronseal, does what it says on the tin. From day one Simon was full of enthusiasm, ideas and information. You’re invited to Poland with him to see the hull in build and always welcome at Dewsbury to see the fit out in progress whenever you want. The craftsmanship in the build is second to none and you certainly won’t find more for your money. We had a couple of teething problems after the Crick boat show, both due to third party products but Simon was down the next day, other end of the country to sort them. Megastar Narrowboats built us a boat more beautiful than we ever imagined we would ever own. We’ve stayed in touch with Simon, no question is a stupid question and a friendship has been born. It’s a massive decision to have a boat built, an even bigger decision to choose the builder, you can’t go wrong with Megastar Narrowboats.

Best boatbuilder there is for me and we consider ourselves very lucky to have become an owner of one of Simon’s boats.
