simeI was always interested in building things, wood being my favourite material!

Little did I know that the dens I made from old doors that I found at the top of my aunts Sally’s garden, to making bird and milk boxes to sell at nine years old, would lead to me to here today.

After securing a place on a carpentry & joinery course, I left college with my city & guilds in advanced craft and during the four years of training I was lucky to have been trained by a very talented joiner, Billy Hurcombe, to who I owe a lot!

By the age of 20 I took my first managers job that required me to head a team of five, it was a hands on role at a bespoke joinery company making windows, I was the only joiner. Over the years, we grew this to a team of 30, making products from small one off windows to specialised  joinery for old fashioned grade one listed buildings,  where quality had to be second nature and of the highest standard.

I stumbled across boats while on holiday, I met a couple who had a narrowboat and when invited for a weekend on their narrowboat, I fell in love with the relaxed pace and the way the world looked trundling along sat at the tiller.

We decided to build  a narrowboat because couldn’t find a ‘fit-out’ I was happy with. “You Could say I got the bug!”  Since the first build our reputation for building canal boats of the highest standard has grown.

We are so proud to now be in a position to take one of our narrowboats to display at the Crick Boat-Show after being invited to share the stand along side of our hull supplier.

Who Is MegAStar Narrowboats

Megastar Narrowboats mission is to grow its presence as one of the market leading canal boat builders, offering the highest quality with customer satisfaction at its heart and great after care should you ever need us.
MegAStar Narrowboats will use only the finest quality materials to build you a canal boat of the highest standard.
We can’t recommend Megastar Narrowboats enough. Simon is a straight talking, straight up Yorkshireman, like Ronseal, does what it says on the tin. From day one Simon was full of enthusiasm, ideas & information. You’re invited to Poland with him to see the hull in build & always welcome at Dewsbury to see the fit out in progress whenever you want. The craftsmanship in the build is second to none & you certainly won’t find more for your money. We had a couple of teething problems after the Crick boat show, both due to third party products but Simon was down the next day, other end of the country to sort them. Megastar Narrowboats built us a boat more beautiful than we ever imagined we would ever own. We’ve stayed in touch with Simon, no question is a stupid question & a friendship has been born. It’s a massive decision to have a boat built, an even bigger decision to choose the builder, you can’t go wrong with Megastar Boats.

Best boatbuilder there is for me and we consider ourselves very lucky to have become and owner of one of Simon’s boats.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________We first met Simon and Sandy early in 2014 after responding to an advert for a boat they had already built called Meg A Star. We liked the look of the pictures, so decided to make the 150 mile journey to Dewsbury to view it. Although the boat wasn’t exactly what we were looking for, the quality and finish of the build was exceptional, and we decided to buy it there and then.

We sailed the 215 miles back to Milton Keynes over the top of the Pennines, on nine different canals, the boat behaved impeccably
for the whole journey, and we were very impressed.

In 2015 we approached Simon about building a second boat similar to Meg A Star, but with everything exactly to our specifications.
Simon agreed and we visited him and Sandy several times during the build to discuss various details with them. We have always found Simon very accommodating, and has many good ideas and suggestions, it’s great that you are talking straight to the main man who is passionate and enthusiastic about his work. We named the boat Meg A Star 2 and even had her painted in the same livery.

I would strongly recommend anyone who is thinking of having a boat built to contact Simon. He is he is an honest, down to earth, hard working, straight talking superb craftsman, and we wish him every success for the future.
